Maori

15 Dec 2009

Cawston Primary School explored the history and culture of the Maoris, the indigineous people of New Zealand. They have a marvelous way of decorating their houses and villages, which we took as a starting point for a wallhanging. The Maoris paint patterns on their doorposts, boats and fences that are not only beautiful but also have specific meanings, like ‘swiftness’ (for a boat) or ‘strength’ (on a doorpost). We made our own images for our own meanings, and collated the patterns together in a large wallhanging that is now displayed in the school hall.
If you would like your pupils to join in making a wallhanging on any theme you are running in your school or class, please contact friedapoll@yahoo.com or call 077 8973 6766

Diversity

15 Jul 2009

Waverley School in Birmingham invited me to work with their pupils on the theme of Diversity. We had a whole day and made four very colourful banners of 1.20 × 1.60 cm approximately, that were paraded around later on. Two banners were swirling with carnavalesk waves, inspired on images of the carnaval of Venice and Rio de Janeiro. The other banners played with the respective themes of European countries and the Americas. All are created with crisp papers and scrap materials, stuck on very sticky and heavy plastic that is finished off with book binding materials and mounted on a pole.

Mythical Creatures

25 Sep 2009

A lovely rainy day we picked for going creative with kids in the libraries of Kenilworth and Stratford. And in a very appropiate setting: we made all things weird and wonderful you can find in books. Sweet Mermaids and princesses and scary vampires and lots and lots more. Mums and dads joined in too, using our plastic water bottles (empty of course) and decorating them with scrap paper.
If you would like to book a workshop making mythical creatures with kids of all ages ranges and abilities, please contact friedapoll@yahoo.com or call 07789736766

22/11/08 Libraries "Dr Who day", Daleks, OODs and Tardis making! Junkart helped library goers to get creative and construct Doctor who inspired models to celebrate Doctor Who day in Warwickshire libraries this weekend.. We had a massive run on Daleks from Junk that later went on to be judged for best model making. a variety of ages took part with the young and old. There are quite alot of Doctor Who dads out there! The Dr Who Dalek making will take place again on January 31st 2009 in two more Warwickshire libraries yet to be announced.

14/11/08 "All creatures great and small" themed residency at Bournebrook Primary school in Fillongley. A week long residency working with the entire school! Junkart helped pupils from reception to year 6 make a variety of animals to be displayed in the school entrance hall and assembly hall. An amazing variety of creatures are now inhabiting the school from rather large hippos, snakes and crocodiles to very tiny mice and insects. We tried to cover all aspects of the animal kingdom to put on display, covering fish, reptiles, sealife, jungle animals to desert and arctic creatures, to name but a few. Everyone had a great time and it was a lovely school to work with. If you would like a residency at your school please phone for information.

27/10/08 Junkart had a very successful day at Warwick Arts centre near Coventry recently. Working with 14 young people to transform the Arts centres studio space into, well SPACE. A whole host of planets, weird aliens and spaceships were made during the day long workshop and was visited by parents in an evening viewing. The visits to the outer regions of the universe were each given protective oxygen masks, a small whip to scare of any unfriendly aliens and a wrist strap to make sure they couldnt drift of into the darker regions of the galaxy. They were then escorted around our very own universe and planets by expert guides visited quite frequently by creatures from beyond the stars. Photos of our transformation will soon be shown on our outreach projects page. If you would like to book Junkart for your own room transformation please ring Shiam 07733206641 or email shiam@junkart.biz
